The Platypus
A platypus swam into my meditations surprising me enough to try to decide what it meant. An early Australian explorer sent back a stuffed specimen of a platypus to England in 1799. The British scientists though it was a huge joke and someone had sewn together various animals to create this unusual creature. It’s no wonder that a platypus signifies being original and true to yourself.
The duck-billed creature can be a bit of a loner. You never hear about a pod of platypuses. If there were, they might have been easier to spot. This excellent swimmer navigates murky waters with ease. If a platypus has shown up in your dreams, thoughts, meditations, or even water ways, you could be in a messy emotional time. Take heart. The platypus will lead you through it while reminding you that it is a solitary journey. It is journey best taken alone and the insights are for the individual traveler.
The platypus weighs in under five or less pounds and isn’t easy to see or track. It’s hard to know how many there are and if they are in danger of extinction. There is no egg laying mammal except for the platypus. It is the sole remainder from its genus. (Animals are divided into families such arachnids, crustaceans, etc.) Humans are rather like platypuses in the fact that the other branches of our species no longer exist, either.
Don’t let its small size fool you into thinking it’s a cuddly critter that needs to be hugged. The male platypus can poison an animal with one strike from its toxin laded spur. Curious dogs found this out to their detriment. There’s no report of a platypus killing a human. Despite its small size, it can be fierce. Rather than be a lesson in aggression, it should be a lesson in setting proper boundaries. Platypuses aren’t chasing dogs down. Instead, they are defending themselves and their family. It’s a reminder to set firm boundaries to prevent any possible altercations of the verbal or physical kind.
When things get chaotic, the platypus reminds you to swim at your own speed and move to your own time table. If he chose to speak in clichés, he might say “March to your own drummer.” The flat-footed mammal reminds you peace can be located inside as opposed to the external world. When things are unclear, the platypus provides clarity.
Platypus people are hardworking, reserved, and are good at communication. They may have a tendency to be loners. It doesn’t mean that they can’t be social, but may need to make an effort to do so.
Unfortunately, platypus people can be shy and often easily hurt. This causes them to withdraw and opt for a night at home than attend an event. Sometimes, they are mislabeled as aloof or even arrogant. Nothing could be father from the truth for these gentle, caring souls.
