Last night, I dreamed of monkeys. They were touching me with their long fingers. In the dream, they didn’t hurt me. They were friendly, but I found the dream disturbing because I don’t like monkeys! Most people are afraid of rabid dogs, bears, snakes, and definitely rats. My shadow animal is a monkey. Ironically, I feel at peace with gorillas, orangutans, bobos, and lemurs.
Shadow animals are creatures we may dislike or avoid. Often when able, we will kill our shadow animal, especially if it is an insect. Their very appearance challenges us and moves us out of a comfort zone. Often, they can mirror traits in ourselves that we don’t even realize we have. Decide what animal or creature you want most to avoid. This shadow animal has strength and abilities you need. When it shows up, it might mean you are facing a difficult decision. Most of us are willing to do the easy thing because it is well, easy. The shadow animal urges us to make the harder decision.
In my dream, the monkey was trying to take my hand and lead me. Those of you who love monkeys, it’s not your shadow animal. By learning about your shadow animal, you can discover what element that is missing or that you need more of to be on the right path.
Some common shadow animals include ants, flies, ravens, rats, snakes, bees, wasps, spiders, and even wolves. Often, they push you into areas you don’t want to go. Your shadow animal can change, especially after you learn the needed lesson. People who have a strong fear of a creature all their life even to the point they can’t watch it on television, never learn their lesson.
After, I dreamed about the monkey, I had another dream about a stranger showing up and trying to lead me. I resisted in that dream too. Maybe, I should investigate what the monkey tried to tell me.
Monkeys and humans aren’t all that different, despite what your conservative pastor might tell you. They develop family bonds, care for one another, and are intelligent. They are also mischievous, playful and resourceful. Many show animals also travel with a monkey because they provide reassurance. The appearance of one in my life could be telling me to be more playful or to strengthen my bonds.
The monkey’s arrival in my dream could mean I’m being fooled. I could think everything is A-Ok, but it isn’t. It could also be a sign about to be more in community since monkeys are not loners. If a monkey bites you in a dream, then a previous behavior could come back to haunt you.
I had to step back and examine what I knew. I’m an introvert who lives by deadlines. I didn’t think everything around me
was okay, so that couldn’t be it. The fact I had a follow-up dream with a person trying to lead me too, which meant I could be on the wrong path. I needed to be more in the spiritual community, when in truth I was drawing away from. I also needed to lighten up and have fun.
I need to examine the monkey’s characteristics to see what I needed. Even if a monkey isn’t your shadow animal, it still has a great deal to teach you.
