It’s spring and the return of Canada Geese to the ponds and rivers near my home. Each spring, summer, and fall we watch the birds raise families. When winter is almost here, they head out. I bet they didn’t fly to Canada if they think it’s cold here. My mother lives farther south and the birds stay all year around there. The birds are Canada geese, not Canadian geese. Although, no one is sure if they’re named after anyone. I doubt this unclear origin of the bird’s name doesn’t bother it at all.
The geese are known for being fiercely protective of family and loyal to its mate. I was walking in a friend’s yard when two geese flew overhead while honking loudly. The message for me was to examine my pursuits and see if I wasn’t following a friend or family’s goal as opposed to my own. A goose person is very family oriented and will often go with the crowd as opposed to doing what they want. My overhead friends could also be warning me that my current path I’m taking is about to change.
Goose people are good at setting boundaries to protect their families and interests. Ask anyone who has gotten too close to a nesting goose and he or she will explain the Rock has nothing on a paternal goose. Geese will attack people if they feel threatened. Mainly, they try to scare people off by flapping their wings and squawking loudly.
A goose is a team member is all sense of the word. Ever watch a V shaped wedge of geese fly by and wonder why they had to be so noisy? The first bird takes the brunt of the wind and has to fly harder than the rest and tires faster. The rest of the birds are cheering him or her on. Consider most sports teams do better on their home turf where their fans cheer them on. Each bird takes turns being the leader, which makes him or her team players. The geese might be saying, “Way to go,” or “I’m glad it’s you this time and not me.”
Geese are intelligent, fearless birds who are not afraid of new experiences. I have four apple trees in my front yard. They provide more apples than I can ever eat. Eventually, they fall to the ground. I watched the geese peck at the rotting apples. The birds elongate their necks to cause food to go down. After a while, the birds started tossing the apples in the air and catching them in flight and chomping down. The birds now made a regular pilgrimage to the apple tree checking for fallen fruit. No one else has reported ever seeing geese eat apples. Perhaps, the ones native to our neighborhood are tired of their bug and grass diet.
Hunters will tell stories where a shot goose will tumble to the ground and its mate will follow and attempt to defend the injured or dead goose. Often when injury occurs, the mate will stay with the hurt goose until it gets better or dies. Legend states they never mate again, but it might be hard to prove.
Maybe you dream of geese flying through your dreams. It could symbolize domestic bliss and marital fidelity or could also signify you’re flying the wrong way. It could allude that you’re entering a more spiritual time on your journey too. The best way to decide what it means is how you feel when you awake. You’re always the best interpreter of your dreams.
