My first encounter with a moose happened at a national park when our Greyhound tour bus joined the lengthy line of tourists waiting to get in the park. The formerly noble moose with huge antler ambled over to our bus seeking a handout. The students put down their windows and fed him chops and snack cakes. The wild creature had adapted to get by on junk food. How sad. Such a creature that is dependent on handouts is not your spirit animal or animal messenger. When an animal depends on you for food, it is not guided to you to deliver a specific message. That’s why we can assume our pets are spirit animals for us.
What if the moose were out in the wild and we spotted each other and shared a moment? Then, that could be an animal messenger. Decide what you were thinking at that very moment or whatever had been weighing on you heavily to understand what to apply the message to. If a moose wanders into your life, consider the moose to understand the message.
The moose is the largest member of the deer family and inhabits forests along New England, Canada, Alaska, Latvia, Estonia and Russia. Its predators include bears, gray wolf, and humans who prize a moose head above their fireplace. The moose is extinct in many countries due to overhunting. Unlike deer, the moose is a loner, and only abandons its solitary path for mating. The moose is also a vegetarian.
Many photos of moose show it wading in the water. With its long legs, it can easily ford the water and use it for safety. It throws off the scent of hunters, protects from fire, and cools in the summer. It is also an excellent swimmer. The moose’s association with water indicate both deep emotional immersion and feminine energy. On the other hand, the impressive antlers are associated with male energy, dominance and bravery. Anyone who has ever witnessed two bucks fighting for a mate, will recognize the aggression. This willingness to fight to the bitter end is also serves as a protective defense as Mama Moose protects her young. The moose is a careful balance of ying and yang energies.
The antlers are symbolic in many ways. Many believe those with the biggest rack win the female, but that isn’t necessarily the case. A large rack demotes intelligence that is used in outwitting the predator and finding food. The antlers also serve as a type of crown, making the moose a bit of royalty in the forest. It’s not too surprising that the image of the moose is often used in coats of arms in past times and in commercial logos currently.
If a moose is your totem, then you may share the gift of blending in. This is amazing when you consider a moose easily tips the scale near 2000 pounds and still goes unnoticed. Sometimes, it is better to observe and listen, as opposed to being in the spotlight. More learning occurs when you’re not performing.
The large nose the moose sport is sometimes fun for cartoonist to draw, but it serves a purpose. A moose can scent predators, water, other moose only to name a few. Humans used to be able to scent fear in other humans, even when a person had evil intention, but we lost that skill hundreds of years ago. The moose’s delicate nose reminds us to be alert to how things smell to us. This is more of a gut or intuitive feeling as to actual smell.
Vision is a big part of the moose’s defense arsenal because its eyes operate independent of each other. It can literally look at two different things at the same time. Its height gives it another visual advantage. It reminds us to be aware of environment, consider the outcome before we react.
In our fast paced, noisy world, the moose reminds us to take time to be alone, preferably in nature. The moose is quick to defend itself and its offspring and offers us the gift of protection and security.
Due to overhunting, the moose had been on the brink of extinction. Programs that bred moose in captivity and release the young adult moose in the wild depend on the moose’s ability to adapt for survival. The moose excel at surviving if no one is shooting at them.
One way the moose survives is knowing when to wade into the deep water and when to turn and fight. Despite the powerful fights between mating males, the moose is quite gentle as demonstrated by the moose that would eat out of people’s hands at the national park. This discernment allows it to choose appropriately.
If a moose shows up in your life, it really has quite a bit to say. A moose in your dreams means long life and abundance. The dream can imply you are like the moose in only using your power when necessary. The rest of the time you blend in and observe.
