Sometimes we don’t even see our animal messengers because they’re nocturnal and we aren’t. How would we know they even stopped by? I have a definite visitor who comes by almost every night and leaves definite signs behind. Mainly, it knocked my heavy flowerpots off the picnic table. It has crashed into the birdbath and wiped out the bee water bowl too. This requires a little detective work on my part.
Not a cat because a feline wouldn’t be more graceful. The pots contain peppers and herbs and a possum is an omnivore eating vegetable, meat, and whatever else, it can find. The fact I fill my bird feeders on the table and often spill the seed makes this an attractive stop for a possum. It wouldn’t be the first time; I’ve had a possum visitor.
My previous visitor lived in the barn and only came out when it ran out of food. What can I learn from a possum? They’re best known for their ability to play dead, which often stops the chase since predator animals tend to focus on motion. The possum also emits a foul smell when threatened, which often stops its pursuer in its tracks. My dog carried home a young possum and dropped it at my feet only to have it scurry away. Playing dead involves slowing their heart and breathing rate to confuse their predators. It is as if they remove themselves from the situation. Possums are survivors. It’s a reminder that sometimes situations are so bad that we have to ignore them while working on surviving and getting out. It could be anything from a toxic relationship, a crappy job or a dangerous neighborhood.
Possums are also excellent bluffers. Anyone who has confronted a possum may have witnessed its hissing and bared teeth. It is enough to get someone to back away. Most of the times, it will slip away, but all animals will bite if left with no clear avenue of escape. Give it room.
The appearance of a possum in your life can be read two ways, rather like a Tarot card. It could be warning you to lay low and wait, emphasizing the need for patience and not to attract attention. On the other hand, it could be assuring you that the university is at work on making your dreams a reality. Your job is to stay alert for your next move.
If your animal totem is a possum, then you’re a clever player in the game of life. Some might call you an opportunist because you wait on the sidelines for the exact right time to step in and win. Possums can often be the Bill Gates in the wildlife world. They’re often underestimated, but they’re highly intelligent and outsmart their rivals. Well, most of the time, they don’t do well against fast-moving pickup trucks.
The Virginia Possum is the only known marsupial in North America. A marsupial has a pouch where she carries her babies. Like most mother animals, she’s fierce in protecting her offspring. The lesson we learn from the possum is keep those things we value close.
Most people do not regard the possum as an intelligent animal, quite the opposite. It’s not what it seems to be. Not surprisingly to dream of a possum can mean someone is deceiving you because he or she is not what he or she pretends to be.
