How do I come up with the next animal for the blog? I meet them in some way. Yesterday, I was walking in West Baden Springs formal gardens during the day, when a raccoon sauntered my way. I stood perfectly still as the raccoon approached and climbed a nearby tree. A nocturnal creature out in the day was weird, but he appeared to have no fear of a human. Raccoons with their masks are often considered tricksters or even bandits. Still, we all wear masks in various situations. His appearance was a reminder of that. We make a deliberate choice to act a certain way in various situations.
If a raccoon has wandered into your life, it could demonstrate to re-examine a situation, issue, or person before releasing it. Often, we hold onto things that do not serve us. It can also be a reminder to accept the gifts already given by the universe.
Raccoons by nature are scavengers. They’re always willing to search for what they need, which is a reminder to be determined and persistent in your quest. They’re also generous to their family. While hunting, they reward the lookout with a treat.
Because the raccoon comes out at night, he represents stealth and secrecy. It is also a reminder to keep our own ideas and plans close to the vest. Too often, when something is in the developmental stages we talk it to death. This allows someone else to poach our creativity and cleverness.
I watched the raccoon climb the tree stretching out the fingers on each hand/paw to grip the tree bark showing his dexterity. While aware of my presence, he showed a fearlessness and a confidence. As a country girl, I knew enough not to challenge or approach the coon too closely. Raccoons while appearing to be curious, playful animals, they can be vicious fighters. They are wild creatures who aren’t meant to be kept as pets.
