My husband took a detour down a country road passing grazing cows and silos until we alarmed a trio of vultures dining on roadkill. The large birds fluttered to the side of the road waiting for our car to pass before returning to the carcass of an unfortunate creature.
Vultures have gotten a raw deal in the publicity department. I don’t think I ever heard anyone claim the vulture as his or her spirit animal. Too bad, because a vulture as a great deal to offer. They’re beautiful in flight and are relatives of the crane.
Most people view the birds as some type of death portent. They arrive after a death has happened as a form of environmental cleanup crew. They in no way caused the death. The birds are scavengers, not predators. They do symbolize death, rebirth, transformation and renewal. While some people may not be sure of their purpose or identity, the vulture does not fall into that group. The bird is the ultimate recycler.
Did you encounter a vulture recently? It could be in a book, art, television show, or even a roadside sighting. The message the vulture brings is to think about your decisions carefully before acting. The birds in the road considered the car that was approaching them and calculated the speed the car was traveling before leaving their meal.
A vulture also reminds us that sometimes we have to examine our companions. They could be the ones holding us back. It takes a clear eye and mind to know when someone is more a psychic vampire than friend.
If a vulture is your totem animal. Be glad. A vulture has a highly evolved immune system that allows it to dine on what would sicken other creatures. It also has the ability to transcend earthly issues and move into a more spiritual realm. Those with a vulture as a totem have deeper insight and can often see auras.
