Friday book reviews are back after an unexpected break.
It is more than a simple lack of tillable soil. Pfeiffer explains the need for the human soul to interact with nature. He draws on the wisdom of the aboriginal people, especially those living in North America and Siberia. Even medical professionals, especially the mental health ones, acknowledge that a simple walk in the woods can distress better than any medication.
What would life be like if there were no trees? Not something, I want to ever consider. Bill Pfeiffer turns that image 180 degrees as he shares his blueprint for building the world we need. Like writers who have gone before him, such as Thoreau and Wendell Berry, he appreciates the need to physically interact with nature, but takes his vision farther.
Our souls not only need to interact with nature, they need to be in communication. It’s a two-way street with nature having so much to teach us. Already, we’ve learned that the big food giants are modifying our food by the inclusion of pesticides that are building up toxins in our livers. Our souls are also being slowly poisoned.
Author Pfeiffer in Wild Earth, Wild Soul offers us a roadmap to find our way back to who we truly are and how to live in harmony with the natural world. He outlines what a Wild Earth Intensive is and how to facilitate one. However, a reader can read the book on his or her own without any interest in facilitating, but will nevertheless be changed by the reading. And by doing so will become an agent of change. Despite all our talk about being an individual, we do not live isolated lives unconnected with others or nature.
Wild Earth, Wild Soul is a beautiful unrolling of a vision of a world as it can be. A world where humanity not only embraces the spiritual harmony of nature, but nature embraces us back. (Nature has been doing this for a while, we just failed to notice.) Pfeiffer gives us the tools and the starting point, but the rest is up to the readers. It is a very readable book that can be used for all ages, possibly starting with middle grades.
Wild Earth, Wild Soul is not only a life-changing book, it’s a world changing book. It is a very definite must-read. Get it in paperback since you will want to take it with you into the woods. If you’re an earth walker (in a very real sense, we all are), this book needs to be in your library.
