Columbus is a small town, untouched by the 21st century. But when three young women are found dead - victims of what appear to be ritual murders - things start to get very dark and dangerous. Private investigator Savannah Levine can handle "dark and dangerous". As the daughter of a black witch, she has a lot of power running through her veins. But her arrival in Columbus has not gone unnoticed. Savannah may think she's tracking down a murderer, but could she be the killer's next target? Of course she could always ask her old friend (and half-demon) Adam Vasic for back up. But Savannah has her own reasons for keeping Adam well away from Columbus. And in any case, she can rely on her own powers...
MY REVIEW
Confident in her abilities, Savannah decides to follow Jesse for a looksee at the crime scene set in the improbable location of small town Columbus nestled between cornfields and woods. After all, she knows a great deal about crimes dealing with the paranormal since that is what her firm specializes in. It also helps that every employee had a special skill. Savannah has a few spells of her own. What could go wrong?
In town, she meets a variety of people. Those who want to gossip about the murders, those who want her to leave without investigating, and at least one who wants to kill her. Into the volatile mix, appears Michael, the detective brother of the latest victim. Initially, they bump heads, but decide to work together.
Savannah tries to handle this all on the QT, never telling her bosses what’s going on, although she does hint to her secret crush, Adam. Good thing too, because people drop like flies in this town, eliminating suspects and bystanders.
Waking the Witch is the first book in a long time that I wanted to finish. I couldn’t wait to get home from work to read it. Every line serves a purpose. Every character is fully rounded and motivated. The story moves at a fast clip that will keep you up long into the night.
The best part is the characters. Savannah has the brashness most twenty-one year olds possess. Author Armstrong doesn’t allow things to go her way as a first time detective. She makes the mistake of alienating people, not taking precautions, and almost killed before she enlists help.
A mystery that kept me guessing who could be behind the murders. The book doesn’t tie up the various threads in the end because it is part of a series. That’s how series work. Great story if you like fast rides astride a vintage Triumph motorcycle through haunted woods with unexpected turns.
