My mother recently died and with her passing, I looked for signs. Some animal messenger that delivered the message that she made it safely to the other side. The blue jay who voiced his protests at my slowness at filling the feeder wasn’t it. Neither was the pileated woodpecker since they had both been frequent visitors at my bird feeding station. Two rabbits showed up under the tree to pick through the discarded seeds. At first, I thought they might be my mother and grandmother’s spirits, but one kept bumping into the other I assured myself that my relatives would treat each other better.
We have a large bedroom window that overlooks our roses. Inside the bed are solar lights. Perched on one of the lights was a beautiful green hummingbird. I’d never see one still before. This particular hummingbird kept returning to the light to attract our notice, which it did. Even though we stood just on the other side of the glass, it remained sedate and peaceful. The hummingbird is a symbol of resurrection.
The hummingbird brings a message of joy. Its very vibrant existence lifts us from our sorrows with a mere sighting. Hummingbirds, despite their tiny size, fly great distances. A perfect messenger to fly from the spiritual world to the physical one. The tiny creatures can move in any direction with ease and speed. They remind us to be flexible.
The bird reminds us the beauty of flowers and their medicinal properties, which makes the creature a healer. Even its the soft whirl of its wings is a restorative song for our souls. While the hummingbird demonstrates independence, it also interacts with its mates without anyone getting hurt. It reminds us to do likewise with our own family and friends.
The hummingbird’s very existence depends on how we care for the earth. Too many pesticides and too few flowers equaled death. The bird reminds us to care for the environment and to keep balance in our own life.
The bird flaps its wings in an infinity symbol pattern It’s no wonder it is associated with eternity, continuity, and infinity.
The bird uses up huge stores of energy by flying, which is why it is always in search of sweet nectar. It reminds us to examine our energy output. Are we wasting energy on trivial things? Do we need to focus our energy on more important areas?
