The deer are delicate creatures if you ever watch one graze. They startle easy dashing away at any sudden sound. Those who have a deer as a totem animal are very sensitive. Empathetic people startle easy too, possibly because they are often in two worlds at once.
Even though most of the deer’s natural predators are gone, the creatures remain vigilant. The deer’s appearance reminds us to be cautious, take nothing at face value. When presented with possible danger, the animal darts off. It’s also a reminder to be prepare to change direction or leave if needed.
During hunting season, my large fenced in backyard often became a deer sanctuary as the graceful creatures jumped the fence to get away from the hunters. This shows a native intelligence and strong instincts. The deer’s instinct helps it to survive. Often, we find ourselves in a sticky situations we could have avoided in we would listen to our inner voice.
Near twilight, I spotted deer near the railroad. The creatures stopped grazing and looked up at me. For a moment, we took each other’s measure until I moved on and they returned to grazing. Could they understand that I meant them no harm? Did they rely on their instinct? It could have been a bit of both.
